An estranged biracial couple must confront their feelings about race and bias after their son is detained by the local police following a traffic stop incident. Their disparate histories and backgrounds inform their assumptions as they try to find out what happened to their son.

CHARACTER LISTING


Kendra Ellis-Connor
African-American, female, late 30s–early 50s. A professor of psychology and mother of a teenage son. Recently separated from her husband. Emotionally raw yet working hard to maintain a professional exterior. Exceptionally intelligent and self-possessed. Major role; onstage for nearly the entire play. 


Scott Connor
White, male, late 30s–50s. Kendra’s estranged husband. An FBI agent of predominantly Irish heritage with deep pride in his family’s military tradition. Rigid in some views but capable of warmth and deep emotional connection. Major role; appears in most scenes. 


Officer Paul Larkin
White, male, mid 20s–early 30s. A bright, congenial young police officer with strong career ambitions and limited real-world experience. Appears in roughly half the play. 



Lieutenant John Stokes
African-American, male, late 40s–mid 60s. A seasoned, no-nonsense law enforcement officer who commands respect and enforces protocol without hesitation. Appears in the final portion of the play (approximately the last fifth). 



A note from the Director


Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script. Actors should bring all known conflicts for January and February. Resumé is optional. No prepared monologue is required. 


Please plan to stay at least an hour, as we may want you to read other parts and or scenes.

Please wear comfortable clothing that you can easily move in.


If you are unavailable on Sunday, December 21st is it possible to audition on Monday, December 22nd before callbacks.

About the Schedule:


American Son rehearsals begin Tuesday, January 6, at the Cloverdale Playhouse. 

January: 3–4 weekday evenings per week 

February: 4–5 weekday evenings per week 

No weekend rehearsals 

All rehearsals run 6:00–9:00 PM



NOT interested in being onstage, but ready to be part of the Playhouse team?

 

We couldn't put a show on the stage without our volunteer crew members! They help create our costumes, sets, and props, as well as help with opening night receptions, answer phones, and sell tickets.


Let us know what you'd like to try! Some people help daily, some monthly, and others just one show per year.
