About the Playhouse

Welcome to The Cloverdale Playhouse, Montgomery, Alabama’s home for community theater!

Starting our 6th Season
The Cloverdale Playhouse is a community-based, volunteer-driven home for the performing arts center in Montgomery, Alabama, founded in 2009 as a 501c3 nonprofit.

The Playhouse is dedicated to presenting entertaining, challenging, and innovative theatrical productions, as well as Special Performances, a monthly music series, and educational programs to enhance the cultural life of the city of Montgomery and the surrounding River Region.

The Playhouse provides a place for members of the community to work together to create magical, transformative experiences for their friends and neighbors.

We’re excited to be in our sixth season of carrying on Montgomery’s rich history of community theater, carrying on the traditions of the Montgomery Little Theater. We want to be on your list of things to do!

Join us.  Audition, take a class, volunteer, or just sit back and enjoy the show.

Artistic Director Sarah Walker Thornton joined the Cloverdale Playhouse at the start of the 2016 Season as its second AD. After graduating from the prestigious MFA program at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Sarah founded the BAMA Theater Company in New York City, where she lived for the past seven years.

Sarah says of returning to her hometown: "I am truly honored and grateful for the opportunity that the Board and the Artistic Committee have given me, and for the heart-warming faith they have in me. I have a great love and respect for the work done at the Playhouse, and I'm thrilled to play a part.
I grew up in the arts community in Montgomery, from attending Camp Shakespeare as a child to playing Scout in To Kill a Mockingbird on the ASF stage, with an education in the Montgomery Magnet Schools that took me all the way through the MFA program at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival and on to New York City. I am passionate about the role a sturdy artistic presence can play in the strength of a community. Over the years, I have seen the arts grow and spread throughout the River Region, and it means a great deal to me to be able to return home and try to give something back to the place that has given me so much over the years. I'm so grateful for the warm welcome and the well-wishes, and I hope to see you all at the Playhouse!"

Managing Director Emily Dauber Flowers is a Montgomery native and a Cloverdale resident with a background in liberal arts and business. A former company dancer with the Alabama Dance Theater, she knows first-hand the role that an arts family can play in shaping lives. She is a graduate of the University of Alabama with an honors degree in English and Philosophy. After working in commercial real estate, she studied art and antiques appraisal at Pratt Institute. Emily’s background gives her an understanding of the intersection of the artistic and the business worlds. She feels honored to be part of the Playhouse team.
