About the Playhouse

Welcome to The Cloverdale Playhouse, Montgomery, Alabama’s home for community theater!

Our 12th Season

The Cloverdale Playhouse is a community-based, volunteer-driven home for the performing arts center in Montgomery, Alabama, founded in 2009 as a

501c3 nonprofit.

The Playhouse is dedicated to presenting entertaining, challenging, and innovative theatrical productions, as well as Special Performances, a regular music series, and educational programs to enhance the cultural life of the city of Montgomery and the surrounding

River Region.

The Playhouse provides a place for members of the community to work together to create magical, transformative experiences for their

friends and neighbors.

We’re excited to be in our twelfth season of carrying on Montgomery’s rich history of community theater, carrying on the traditions of the Montgomery Little Theater. We want to be on your list of things to do!

Join us.  Audition, take a class, volunteer, or just sit back and enjoy the show.

Artistic Director

Sam Wootten has been an actor, writer, director, and producer of theatre since well before his more recent endeavors as a small-business owner in Montgomery. Raised in Marietta, GA, Sam's early interest in theatre manifested in years of work with Atlanta-area theatres and their educational and children's programs. He had a brief stint pursuing film and television opportunities in L.A. before moving back to earn his BA in Theatre from the University of Georgia, an MFA in Drama from Indiana University, and a certification from the Stage Internazionale di Commedia dell'Arte in Reggio Emilia, Italy. After moving to Chicago, Sam started his own theatre company focused on producing new and original work. He continued working with several professional companies throughout the Midwest on award-winning and critically-acclaimed productions. Sam has appeared in and done voice-over work for several national and regional tv shows and commercials. He is passionate about theatre education and has worked with students from preschool to adult workshops. Sam has served as a board member for the Cloverdale Playhouse since its founding and performed and participated in various productions in the River Region. Most importantly, he is a spouse to Emily, a parent to Miriam and Henry.

Technical Director

J. Scott Grinstead joined the Cloverdale Playhouse in the summer of our 6th Season. In the third grade, Scott performed for the first time on stage and knew, in that moment, that he wanted to be involved in the entertainment arts for the rest of his life.
As a technical director, professional puppeteer, director, and voice actor, he has spent more than a decade developing large-scale productions for audiences of all ages.
His work in technical theatre has led to his working as a lead carpenter, assistant technical director, technical director, lighting designer, sound designer, and properties master for various theatres.
What began as a child has become a passion that Scott has been able to use to inspire audiences of all ages to think, laugh, and engage with the world through the arts.
