The play takes place in the Younger apartment on Chicago’s Southside in the early 1950’s.

Character Breakdown

Ruth Younger – 28-30, African-American, married to Walter Lee. Weary and concerned about the future of the family. She manages the household.

Travis Younger – 9-11, African-American, son of Walter and Ruth. Smart, loves his family.

Walter Lee Younger – 30-40, African-American. A strong personality, proud, defiant, caring father, and discontented with life and the world as he sees it. His dream is to make a better life for his family.

Beneatha Younger – 20-25,  African-American, younger sister to Walter Lee. Independent, ambitious, studying  to become a doctor.

Lena Younger –55-60 African-American, matriarch of the family. Mother of Walter and Beneatha, Nurturing, sensitive,consoling, she is the glue that holds the family together.

Joseph Asagai – 30-40. Nigerian. Proud of his African heritage He has aspirations of returning to Africa to share what he has learned in America. Speaks with a dialect.

George Murchison- 25-30, African-American, friend of Beneatha, who takes her out on dates. Arrogant, a bit full of himself, a university student.

Karl Lindner – 40’s Caucasian, spokesperson of the tenants committee.

Bobo – 36-60, African-American, friend of Walter Lee.

Two Moving Men, African-American, 25-50.

Audition Sides and Scenes will be made available as of Monday, February 17th,2014

Copies of the Script will be made available but must be read at the Playhouse.
